Obituary

Charles Ray Hon, Sr., 97, of Lakeland died Monday August 15, 2016 at Louis Smith Memorial Hospital.

He was born April 4, 1919 in White County, Illinois to the late Gayle Taylor. He was raised by his grandparents , who had ten children of their own, and grew up as an Illinois farm boy with his aunts and uncles. After high school he joined the U. S. Army in 1938 and served two years in Panama with the 14th Infantry. Volunteering for flight training, he joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, and served as a transport glider pilot and L-5 pilot with the 1st Air Commando Group, 1943-44, during the Central Burma Campaign. He served in Japan during the Korean War. In 1960, he retired as a MSGT from Orlando AFB after 22 years of service. He went on to retire again after 15 years with the U. S. Postal Service in Orlando, FL. Since 2008 he resided in Lakeland, GA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years: Bessie Louise Howard Hon who died July 24, 2012.

He is survived by his daughter: Gayle Altman of Apopka, FL; 2 sons: Charles Ray (Barbara) Hon, Jr. of Bushnell, FL and Tip (Neda) Hon of Ray City; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Friday August 19, 2016 at 11:30 AM in Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL, with full military honors.
