Cletus Nathaniel Youmans, 91, of Oak Park, GA passed away Nov. 11, 2020 from complications due to a fall and dementia.
Cletus "Clete" Nathaniel Youmans passed away in Jackson, TN on Nov. 11, 2020. He was born April 12, 1929 in Oak Park, Ga to the late Cecil Roy Youmans and late Eva Mae (Gaskins) Youmans. He grew up in his early and teen years in Nashville, GA and on Cat Creek (north of Ray City, GA). He graduated high school from Pine Grove School near Ray City, GA. Clete entered the Navy in May 1945 and worked on a ship most of his three-year term. In 1948 he moved to Atlanta GA and worked at the Atlanta airport as a meteorologist, and he later transferred to the Tallahassee/Thomasville airport as their meteorologist. He married Nellie Ruth Griner (b. Dec. 2, 1929 in Nashville, GA, d. Jan. 21, 1980 in Dothan, AL) in 1950. In the early 1950's Clete began a 32-year career with the Army (civil service) at Ft. Rucker, AL. In the early to middle 1960's he "moonlighted" in the evening as WTVY's (Dothan, AL) first meteorologist and weatherman. In 1966, as a civil service Educational Specialist, he transferred to Ft. Stewart, GA, and moved again in 1968 to Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA. During his time in Savannah, Clete also was an evening weatherman for WTOC tv station. In 1972 he returned to Ft. Rucker where he was instrumental in leading the Advanced Warrant Officer Training Program for helicopter pilots and was also part of the early development of the Apache helicopter. In 1984 he retired but then accepted a three-year job with the Indonesian Air Force, planning for arrival of F-16 jets. In 1987 he returned to the U.S., and in 1988 he ran for and won the office of Probate Judge of Houston Co., AL and began his six-year term in 1989. In 1995 Clete retired to his farm in Madrid, AL. In 2019, at the age of 90, he moved to Dyersburg, TN. During his life he loved to fish, hunt, cook for friends, farm and attend church. He was an active member of the local Masonic lodge (32 nd level), Kiwanis, and Mt. Enon Baptist church.
Family Members: He was preceded in death by his wife Nell Griner, brother Idus Youmans and sister Uvah Jane Moody. Clete was survived by two children, his daughter Eva Janelle Youmans Morrow (husband Everett) of Valrico, FL, his son Cletus Dannitte Youmans (wife Deidra) of Dyersburg, TN, four grandchildren: Kyle Nathaniel Youmans (wife Ashley) of Pueblo West, CO, Emily Claire Youmans (Dyersburg, TN), Nathan Morrow (wife Ceci) of Orlando, FL, and Stephen Morrow (wife Allison) of Jacksonville, FL, and four great grandchildren.
Funeral/ Visitation: Due to Covid-19, only graveside services will be held and organized by Lovein Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat. Nov. 14, 2020 at the Long Bridge Cemetery SW of Nashville, GA, where Clete will be buried beside his wife Nell.
