Obituary

Eleanor Hambrick Gaskins, 90, died Monday, October 7, 2019 in the SGMC Berrien Campus.

Born in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Crittenton Taylor Hambrick and Goldie Champion Morgan Hambrick, Mrs. Gaskins was a retired school teacher.  She graduated from Colquitt County High School in 1946 and then from Georgia State College for Women in 1950.  Eleanor graduated from University of Georgia in 1960 with a Masters in Education.  She also received the honors of Phi Upsilon Omicron and Delta Kappa Gamma.  She also assisted in writing three state curriculum guides for Home Economics in Georgia.

Mrs. Gaskins began her teaching career at Lowndes County High School in 1950.  She then became Chairman of the Home Economics Department and head of the new Home Management House on the ABAC campus from 1961 to 1968.  She met her husband there, the late Lossie Gaskins who later became Berrien County School Superintendent and they married.  She eventually began teaching at Berrien County High School until she retired in 1994.

Mrs. Gaskins was a faithful member at Nashville UMC.  She was a long time member of the Circle G of the United Methodist Women.  She volunteered many hours packing and delivering meals for many families.  Eleanor was a FHA sponsor from 1968 to 1994.

Eleanor Gaskins was predeceased by her husband, Lossie Gaskins, her sister, Barbara Houston, and her brother Hugh Hambrick.  Survivors include her sister in law, Carol Hambrick, of Aberdeen, NC, her niece Deborah Houston of Mt. Sterling, IL, Rebecca Peterson (Spencer) of Macon, GA, nieces Heather Dunn (Cory) of Southern Pines, NC, and Deidre Williamson (Shawn) of Leland, NC, and one nephew, Taylor Hambrick, of Durham, NC.  She has two great nephews, Tommy Peterson (Libby) of Macon, GA, and Spencer Peterson, Jr. (Shea) of Denver, CO, three great nieces, Haviland Moore of Mt. Sterling, IL, Ashley Dunn of Southern Pines, NC, and Amelia Williamson of Leland, NC, and one great great niece, Hayes Peterson of Macon, GA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday October 12, 2019 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Lovein Funeral Home with the Rev. Russ Elkins and the Rev. Mark Addington officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Nashville United Methodist Church or The Caring Place.
