John Weldon "Jack" Harris, Sr., 92, who resided in Berrien Nursing Center in Nashville, GA Passed away on Sunday June 21, 2020 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Tampa, FL on October 11, 1927 to the late Perry Alton Harris, Sr. and the late Alma Mobley Harris. He served in the Georgia State Guard until his graduation from Berrien High School, then joined the Merchant Marines. He became an ordained minister and pastored many churches throughout Georgia and Florida. He also provided counseling services to both church members and non-members alike. He received a Bachelor of Science in Sociology in 1973 and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice in 1975 from Valdosta State College, which led to a career with the Department of Offender Rehabilitation. During retirement, he returned to Nashville and was a dedicated member of Nashville First Baptist Church, served on various committees and instructed classes.
Jack, an avid fisherman from the time he was small, taught the "art" of the cast, as well as the hot spots in a body of water and preferred fishing lures for success. He also spent a great deal of time reading for both pleasure and to prepare for upcoming sermons and presentations. He enjoyed life and was one who lived passionately, spontaneously and without boundaries.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 56 years, Eileen Parish Harris; son: John Weldon "Johnny" Harris, Jr. (Angela) of Atlantic Beach, Fl, daughter: Ann Mary Hampton (Chris) of Arizona; stepdaughter: Janice McEwen Bonnell (John) of Valdosta, GA; stepdaughters-in-law, Lona Heick McEwen of Savannah, GA and Edith Talley (Edie) McEwen of Brownwood, TX; 18 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, George Wayne Harris (Loretta) of Calhoun, GA; nephews, nieces and many friends.
Jack was pre-deceased by his parents; a son, James Douglas "Doug" Harris; great granddaughter, Haley Ann Cummings; step-sons Robert Odell "Bobby" McEwen and Terry E. McEwen; step-grandson, William Odell "Bill" McEwen; his brother and sister-in-law, Perry Alton Harris, Jr. and Virginia Harris.
A private family graveside service will be held Thursday June 25, 2020 at Westview Cemetery in Nashville with Rev. Keith Stewart officiating. Memorials may be made to: Alzheimer's Association National Capital Area Chapter 8180 Greensboro Drive, Suite 400 McLean, VA 22102 or to the First Baptist Church of Nashville.
