While in the Air Force, he received his training at Chanute AFB in Rantoul, IL, and served as a Flight Simulator Specialist at the U. S. Jim worked at Delta Air Lines for 35 Years "September 1, 1970 thru January 1, 2005" as a Flight Simulator technician until he retired.

His sister Nancy recounts "When we were kids in Cincinnati, OH, Jim was a Boy Scout. He used to sit in his bedroom and I would be in a nearby closet. He would type in Morse Code and I would receive it. He was also a ham radio operator in Cincinnati and in New Port Richey, FL. His call sign was W4KEF. He was about 7 yrs 4 months older than I. At 7 pm on week nights in Cincy, we three kids would climb on top of his bed and watch western shows together. On Monday it was Sugarfoot. Then there was Maverick and Cheyenne. I adored him and really looked up to him. We moved to New Port Richey, FL in the summer before Jim's junior year in high school. Jim was very smart. He was the Salutatorian of his graduating class (1961). In Florida, he worked in the orange groves like many of his friends. He was well-liked in high school. After high school, he went to Auburn University in Auburn Alabama for one or two years before he joined the Air Force."
