Jean Barrentine Dixon, 89, of Alapaha died Sunday June 9, 2013 at her residence.
She was born July 23, 1923 in Coffee County to the late Joseph Barrentine and the late Genora Walker. She was a homemaker, and for many years served as bookkeeper for Dixon LP Gas Company and C.M. Dixon Fertilizer Company. She was a charter member of the Alapaha Baptist Church where she faithfully served in many capacities. She was a strong supporter and worker of the W.M.U. and served as a trustee of Georgia Baptist Children's home. She also served in many charitable organizations including the American Cancer Society which she was co-chairperson for a number of years. She was the widow of Willis Herbert Jones who died in 1953 and Carl Mathis Dixon who died in 1983. She is also preceded in death by 2 sisters: Thelma Schauffer and Addie McMillan; 4 brothers: Alton Barrentine, Thomas Barrentine, Eutychus Barrentine, and Woodrow Barrentine; and a grandson: Bert Jones.
She is survived by 2 daughters: Joyce Tully of Colquitt and Mary Ellen Crisp of Nashville; 4 sons: Wayne (Michelle) Jones of Nashville, Steve (Rhonda) Dixon of Alapaha, Joe (Marian) Dixon of Alapaha, and Mark Dixon of Alapaha; 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday June 11, 2013 at 11:00 AM in the Alapaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Gibbs and Rev. Kenneth Kicklighter officiating. Interment will follow in Oakridge Cemetery in Tifton, GA. Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be sent to: Alapaha Baptist Church, Hospice of Tiftarea, or American Cancer Society.
