Obituary

Jessie Herbert Hendley, 96 of Braselton, Georgia passed away peacefully on Monday, June 27, 2022, at The Phoenix of Braselton. Born May 25, 1926, in Berrien County, Georgia, to William Thomas Hendley and Annie Vaughn Hendley, he spent the majority of his career in the military and in building materials sales while residing in Albany, Georgia and later in Americus, Georgia.

Jessie Herbert was a dedicated patriot serving terms in both the United States Navy for two years and the United States Air Force for an additional 18 years. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and was stationed in Beaufort, South Carolina. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1948 and retired from military service in 1966 having attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Over the course of his military career he was deployed to several bases within the United States as well as to international bases of operations including South Korea,Guam, and Okinawa. Jessie Herbert distinguished himself in his service to our country through active duty in World War II, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War.

After he retired from the United States Air Force in 1966, while stationed at Turner Air Force Base in Albany, Georgia, he began a second career in building material sales.  In the mid 1990's he and his wife, Alice moved to Hiawasee, Georgia where they spent 20 wonderful and carefree years in retirement before moving back to Albany, Georgia, He loved the Georgia mountains and relished mountain living in Hiawassee. Jessie Herbert was a dedicated Christian who served the church in numerous capacities and strived daily to live a good and virtuous life.He was an avid reader and a passionate gardener.  He enjoyed telling humorous stories and singing, and he loved his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers J.T, Hendley, Robert Hendley, and Vernon Hendley, and his sisters Lena Mae Hendley Rowan, Gladys Hendley Nix, and Ruby Hendley Roberts.

His survivors include his wife of 74 years, Alice Mainor Hendley; a sister in law Barbara (Vernon) Hendley of Augusta, Georgia; a daughter Linda "Kitty" (Steve) Bradshaw of Flowery Branch, Georgia; sons Howard (Sharon) Hendley of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and Chris (Ragan Pollock) Hendley of Pelham, Georgia; grandchildren Kelly (Jay) Gerstenhaber, Andrew Lewis, Elizabeth (Ryan) Ott, Holden (Jessica) Hendley, and Adam Hendley; great grandchildren Jacob Shelton, McKenna Holmes, Colleen Ott, Cassidy Ott, and Emily Ott; great great grandchild Hendley Shelton; former daughter-in-law Susan Spencer Hendley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private interment will be held in the Nashville Memorial Gardens.
