August 4, 1937 – May 18, 2022
James Craft "Jim" Hunt, age 84, passed away and went to heaven in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 18, 2022. He was under the care of Hospice of Advent Health. He had been battling dementia and Parkinson's for several years and recently contracted Covid. He was born August 4 th , 1937 in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Arthur (Sid) Hunt and the late Ruth Idalia Hunt, both of Tifton.
Jim served in the Army National Guard for 20 years, retiring as a Captain Company Commander. He got his start as a history teacher in Hahira, GA, as well as coaching basketball and then moved on to school administrator at Valdosta Jr High school until moving to Nashville, GA to become principal of Berrien High School. He was also principal of several other schools in Berrien County. Jim served on the Georgia School Boards Association as a board member for Berrien County Schools. He was an active member of the Nashville, Ga. United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School classes for many years and also served as lay leader. Jim was an avid member of the Nashville/Berrien Rotary Club in Nashville, GA where he served as the sergeant-of- arms until he moved to Winter Springs, FL where he also was a Rotarian. Jim was a high school basketball official for 30 years for the Southern Basketball Officials Association. He was a graduate of Valdosta State University and continued on to receive his M.S. in Education Administration at Georgia Southern University. Jim was also an avid golfer and you could always find him on the course with his friends. He volunteered as a security officer at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy Roberts Hunt; and his daughters and their spouses Kim and Chris LaRocca; Sydney and David Smith, all in the Orlando, FL area and his grandson, Hunter LaRocca of Orlando; sister-in-law, Jeanette Hunt of Adel, Ga.. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Scott Brogdon LaRocca (25) who died almost 1 year to the day on May 20, 2021 and his brother Larry Brogdon Hunt. He has many nieces and nephews who also loved him dearly. He loved his family with all of his heart and always had a smile on his face and such sweet words to anyone who came in contact with him. He never met a stranger. He loved to tell stories, spend time with his family and was loved by so many friends, students and teachers over the years during his time as administrator in the Berrien County School System. He had such a kind and gracious heart and helped so many students in need. He was always found walking the halls of the school whistling, singing and stopping by the teacher's room to tell a joke or two. He always chose to do more for others than he did for himself.
The family will have a graveside service at the Oviedo Methodist Cemetery on Monday May 23, 2022 at 10 am. A visitation will be held at Lovein Funeral Home in Nashville, Ga on Thursday May 26 at 6 pm with a memorial service following at 7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to your personal choice of a church or charity.
