Obituary

Mitchell Ottis Moore, 71, child of God, died on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after a valiant battle against Lewy Body dementia with his family by his side.

Mitchell was born on April 6, 1955, in Valdosta, Georgia, the third of five children born to William Wesley and Ruby Rebecca Moore. He attended Berrien County schools and was a 1973 graduate of Berrien High School, where he played football.

He met the love of his life, Julie Mathis, at 24 years old. Facing every season of life together, Mitchell and Julie built a life grounded in unwavering faith, devotion, shared dreams, quiet strength, and enduring friendship. Married on December 15, 1979, Mitchell was a devoted husband to Julie for more than 47 years. He was a beloved father and grandfather, cherished brother, adored uncle, respected attorney, avid outdoorsman, and loyal friend.

Mitchell obtained his undergraduate degree in political science from Valdosta State College in 1977 and was awarded his Juris Doctor degree cum laude from The Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1981. While at Mercer, Mitchell was a member of Phi Delta Phi legal honor society, among the top percentage in his class and served as associate editor for the fifth circuit survey of the Mercer Law Review.

After graduation from Mercer, Mitchell and Julie returned home to Nashville to establish his law career which spanned more than four decades and included four law firms: Perry & Franklin, P.C., Perry, Franklin, & Moore, P.C., Moore & Studstill, P.C., and Mitchell O. Moore, P.C. He was appointed as the city attorney for Nashville, Georgia by Mayor Connie Perry, a position that he held for several years. He served as associate judge for the Magistrate Court of Berrien County from 2008 – 2024. Mitchell’s life principle was to make the world a better place, and he demonstrated this by his service as a juvenile court judge and guardian ad litem for many years for the children of Berrien County. He retired from practice in 2025 at the age of 70 after being an advocate of justice for residents of Berrien and surrounding counties for 44 years. He was a member of the Georgia Bar and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and was admitted to practice in the State of Georgia Supreme Court, and the State of Georgia Court of Appeals.

Mitchell served for several years on various Board of Directors, including the Carrie Dorsey Perry Library, Berrien County Hospital, and the American Heart Association, for which he received multiple awards for his meritorious service. He was a dedicated member of Rotary International, a charter member of the Nashville-Berrien chapter, a past president and a “Paul Harris Fellow”. His fellow Rotarians would agree he was a loyal member, and their chapter was better because of him. When Mitchell’s illness became too debilitating for him to attend meetings, the club voted to make him an honorary member.

Mitchell was a lifelong and active member of the Nashville Methodist Church where he gave of his prayers, his presence, his gifts and his service. He held various leadership positions within the church and willingly served on almost every committee. He especially enjoyed working with the “JAMS” ministry (Jesus and Meals). He loved his church.

Mitchell is survived by so many that were blessed to be a part of his life story but none more significant than his soul mate, best friend and wife, Julie Mathis Moore, and their children: son, Mitchell Blakely “Blake” Moore (Meg), and their sons Wesley Mitchell (“Wesley”) and Marshall Henry (“Marshall”); and daughter, Blair Moore Griner (Daniel), and their children Melba Jane (“MJ”) and William Breman (“Willie”). He is also survived by his siblings: Jo Moore Lovein (Bob) and their family; Fred Moore (Cindy) and their family, and Melanie Moore Miller (Scott) and their family; sisters-in-law: Pam Mathis Williams (Don) and their family, and Gloria Mathis and her family; over 50 nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and friends. Mitchell is preceded in death and was welcomed into Heaven by his parents William Wesley Moore and Ruby Rebecca Moore and his brother William Wesley “Bill” Moore, Jr.

The family extends gratitude to their faithful friends, to Mitchell’s outstanding caregiving team and Langdale Hospice House. To all who have been present, in person and in spirit these past years, know that you made a difference and helped brighten our days.

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that day.”
