Obituary

Nellie Sue Daniel Lindsey, 88, of the West Berrien Community, passed away on Thursday February 4, 2021 at Fellowship Home in Nashville, Georgia.

She was born to the late William M. Daniel & Deedy Jones Daniel, November 18, 1932, on Sand Mountain in Alabama, the youngest of ten children. Nell graduated from Fyffe High School in 1949 and attended business school in Nashville, Tennessee. In her early career she was an a switchboard operator for Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Chattanooga.

She married the late James Russell in 1953, and they traveled the world together as an Air Force family. She said, "I saw a lot of places and met a lot of good folks for a little girl from Sand Mountain."  She is preceded in death by all of her ten siblings and their spouses. Nell is survived by three children: David Lindsey (Debbie) of West Berrien; Elizabeth Valenti (Steve) of Roswell; and Kathryn Kent (Trever), of West Berrien. She is also survived by four grandchildren:  Katlyn Lindsey, Kaycee Lindsey, John Valenti and Lizzie Valenti as well as many nieces, nephews and her beloved in-laws, George Thurmond and Linda Wilson. Nell was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind beautiful memories.

Nell was an accomplished seamstress and love the song stylings of Willie Nelson and Braves baseball. She was a voracious reader and life-long learner. She passed the value of literacy and education to her children, grandchildren and the many students who passed through the halls of West Berrien School where she served as a highly regarded employee as school secretary for 20 years. Nell enjoyed those years of service and was proud of the accomplishments of the many students who she met along the way.

Per her wishes, she will be cremated and interred with her husband at Pine Grove Cemetery with no public services to be held. Nell was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the Berrien Seniors Association and a supporter of many veterans' organizations, Hospice and local libraries. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the organization of your choice.
