Our History

The first recognized funeral home in Berrien County was begun by W.H. Tygart. Holmes Giddens was the successor to the Tygart Funeral Home and built Giddens Funeral Home in 1937. Due to illness, Mr. Giddens sold his funeral home in 1944 to E.P. Bowen, Jr and W. Bruce Donaldson, Jr of Tifton and was merged into Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Norman M. Lovein, Jr came to Berrien County in 1945 as the funeral director in charge of the Bowen-Donaldson firm. He had been associated with Bowen-Donaldson prior to his service in WWII. He soon purchased a 1/3 interest in the firm and the funeral home name was changed to Lovein Funeral Home. Norman purchased full ownership in 1951. In 1969 Robert S. Lovein joined his father in the operation of the family firm and shared a professional relationship with him until Norman's death in January of 1973.

The Lovein family constructed a new facility at 1218 Adel Road in 1978. Bob's mother Alcyone S. Lovein, died in March of 1987 and he purchased the property and full stock ownership of Lovein Funeral Home, Inc. from her estate. In 1997, Robert S. Lovein, Jr joined the family firm as a third generation funeral director and is now co-owner. George W. Hughes has been an associated funeral director with the Lovein family since 1963, retiring on September 30. 2024. Robert S. "Tripp" Lovein, III, the fourth generation Lovein, has now joined our firm as a licensed funeral director/embalmer. Since 1946 the name Lovein in Berrien County has defined people who care about you at a time when there is no substitute for an understanding and caring attitude.
